Coming in at the fourth spot on our Supergirl wish list is another newcomer, Ruby Arias. Ruby's story has been closely intertwined with Sam's so far in season three, which has been the gateway to Sam's emotionally painful transformation into Reign. From the deep connection to her mother to her uncertain future on the show, we discuss Ruby's purpose and potential below.

Opal - Ruby is a plot device at the moment. In both the Reign plot and Alex’s exploration of motherhood. She has really no personality of her own besides to sit there and absorb the heartfelt speeches that Sam pelts in her direction. It’s almost shocking to me that she’s meant to be a regular for season four (as per the rumours that circulated earlier this year). If she is, well they need to flesh out the character. I’d love to see them parse Ruby out as more of a Supergirl fangirl, show her in more dynamic character interactions, and flesh her out more than just a stock character.

Mia - Ah, Ruby. I like her well enough, but we don’t know her apart from some exaggerated personality traits: boldness and curiosity. We’re only nine episodes into the season yet, so she could have a major arc coming up now that her mum has become Reign, and I do believe that is in the cards for her. I’d love to see her have some minor powers seeing as she’s half-Kryptonian. I also want to see them challenge her: will she choose to side with the good once she finds out what her mother has done, or will her loyalty to her mum win over and Ruby will join her, so to speak? I just want to know Ruby more because I think she could be a really interesting character in the future.

Winnie - There is no way what I’m about to say does not come off as horrible, but Ruby annoys the hell out of me. After that antic in 3x02 - “Come save me, Mom” - I have not recovered. That said, she had a really sweet moment with Sam in 3x09 which made it evident that Ruby will play a role in the conflict of Sam vs. Reign. In terms of what I wish for the character, I wish that we can see what it means for Ruby to be a half-human, half-Kryptonian killing machine. Could she maybe have powers? It would be really interesting to see that!

Michelle - I don't want to draw parallels where it's unwarranted, however I see a lot of similarities between Ruby and Dawn Summers (Buffy's sister in Buffy the Vampire Slayer) if only for the fact that the fan response to her is the same, which is that they're annoyed by her whiny behavior that seems to be super immature for her supposed age. As was said above, she's basically just an extension of Sam’s humanity, nothing truly more. I want to see more from her and hopefully some maturity so that she's actually likeable. I also want to see more of her and Sam, because the part in 3x09 with in the office was my favorite scene of hers so far. It's definitely going to hurt - we've said that - but what will really make it sting is if we end up feeling for what Sam and Ruby are losing by Reign rising.

Cristina - I agree with both Opal and Winnie here in that Ruby has really just been an annoying plot device so far. She only exists to make the audience feel sorry for Sam and to build an emotional connection so that Sam’s transformation to Reign is more painful. I’ll be completely honest here, I see two great possible scenarios with Ruby’s role in 3B, but I don’t know if the show will choose either. 1) If there is any hope for redemption for Reign or for Sam defeating the inner demon, so to speak, then it will (and should) come through Ruby. Sam’s love for Ruby has been at the forefront of her story and I won’t be surprised if it wins out in the end, although it will definitely be emotional. 2) This option is brutal. But it would make for some shocking TV, that’s for sure. Based on something I read from the comics, it’s said that only another Worldkiller can defeat a Worldkiller. With Ruby being Sam’s daughter, what if Ruby were forced to kill her own mother to save the world from Reign? I highly doubt the show would ever go this far, but just imagine!

Now that you've heard our wishes for Ruby Arias for the rest of season three, let us know what you think. What do you hope to see with Ruby when Supergirl returns next year? Stay tuned for more on our wish list tomorrow!
